It took over two years of intense work by the two artists to develop the concept
and the execution of the 12 paintings. The inspiration for the style concept was
Ben Shahn. He was a Lithuanian-born American artist and member of the Social
Realist movement. His expressive figurative paintings, murals, and posters were
inexorably tied to his pursuit of social justice and lifelong activism within political
beliefs that emphasized the need to protect and help the less fortunate members of
society. His focus and themes were considered in line with the artists’ belief that the
Menorah was an appropriate symbol for these efforts.
